Brian Gartside has been established on the NZ art scene for 40 years, firstly as a Teachers College Lecturer In Art and Ceramics and later as a successful and respected potter and clay artist. He has work in most of the Art museum collections in New Zealand. He lives in Pukekohe and his ceramic work is noted for his strong colourful images that reflect NZ with geographical symbols and images
For the past twenty years he has published magazine articles, contributed to several international conferences and taught workshops in ceramics on a regular basis in Canada, USA, Britain and Australia and has been a guest artist in Hungary, Finland, USA and Canada.
Brian Gartside was born in Chorley, Lancashire, England. He visited New Zealand in 1964, but in 1966 returned to London to lecture in Art at the Sydney Webb College of Education. Returning to New Zealand in 1970, he took up a position in Auckland as Lecturer in Art at Ardmore Teachers College then North Shore Teachers College in 1974. At this time he was able to set up his own studio and workshop. He now lives in rural Pukekohe, where he produces a colourful range of domestic and decorative ware.
