Rachel Murphy

Rachel works predominately in porcelain slip casting, using plaster moulds and slip (essentially a watery clay). The mould absorbs the moisture out of the slip and leaves a build up of clay inside, which becomes the finished piece.

Rachel colours batches of slip with stain to precise tones and then takes these, painting the landscape and skyscape inside a mould in layers. The mould is a negative space and the layers go on in reverse, which means each layer is covered with the proceeding layer.

The finished piece is then painted with enamel and gilded in 24K Gold leaf.
